Response to client brief

 Explanations of Demographics

My target audience age range is 16 - 24 years old. This thriller opening sequence is open to all ethnic groups and form any social economic background and to male and female. In my thriller opening sequence I will include, some relatable events, such as being followed home by a stalker, which happens quite a lot to people between the ages of 16 to 24 years old. And this will help bring awareness as well such as how to stop yourself from looking like a stalker and scaring someone especially who is a female. There is an advantage to engage a new audience to something new that I am creating, and it is a new opportunity to grab an audience and make sure my opening thriller sequence. I believe there will be some challenges in creating this opening thriller sequence. First of all there will be a challenge of catching the audience's attention straight away when the the opening sequence starts, otherwise the audience will get bored very quickly. After I gain the audience's attention straight away, I will then need something with some tension to keep them on the edge of their seats. And then finally at the end of the opening thriller sequence I will need something that will leave them hanging and wanting more from the opening sequence.

Conventions

In my production of my thriller opening sequence I will be using two different types of conventions. The first one I will be using is the enigma one which is all about mystery which is what my opening sequence is about. My story creates from the very first couple scenes and that's what creates the enigma as, enigma is a key thriller convention. Plot twists are also a key thriller convention, as thriller need some twists to it, to create some tension within the characters.

Industry Requirements

Creating an opening sequence requires some rules and boundaries. And these rules and boundaries are provided by regulatory bodies such as BBFC who regulate films and will regulate my thriller film as well. BBFC will make sure that my thriller film is appropriate for the ages that are shown in the brief. And that my thriller film will attract it's target audience. There may also be some music that may be affected by copyright so PRS will need to be used. Because if I even have a small clip of a song I will still need permission to use it in my thriller film. PRS makes sure the artists get the credit they deserve from what they have produced.

Film Classifications

I believe that my film will be a 15 rated film as my target audience is 16-24 years old. This will also be because there is some violence and inappropriacy for younger children as it will scare them. My thriller will not be that bad in terms of violence to be an 18 rated film. So that is another reason as to why my film is rated 15.

Medium

I will use the medium that is displayed in the brief.

Audience Research

With my first question, I can see that there are very similar responses. Everyone has all similar tastes but also have different tastes. As we can see, action is the most popular genre with 33.3%of people voting for it, the a close second with 27.8% psychological and then comedy then crime. But with all the sub genres I can see everyone has different opinions on which sub genre is the best. This shows me that more people enjoy action thrillers which means i should make my own production have some more thriller to it

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 2: How old are you?. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With this question I can see that there are more people who are between the ages 11-18 who enjoy thriller film, but there are also some 40+ people who are also interested and entertained by thriller films. This age question, helps me to understand which age range of people to target my production around. This will help me engage the most audience and also make it interesting for the audience.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 3: What time of the day is the best for a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With this question I can see that there are more people who watch thriller films in the afternoon, this is because most people go out to the cinema during the day but also could just be at home on a holiday and relaxing. The second highest is the evening which is the most common time to go to the cinema for adults but its also a really good time to watch thriller films as the atmosphere outside helps with with setting the mood for the thriller film. This tells me that I should make my film appropriate to watch for whatever time in the day.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 4: What is the best weather condition for a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With this question I can see that people really like having a rainy thriller film. I understand this because it can set the scene for the film and can give the connotations of " suspense and tension". Rainy weather is also the best because of the atmosphere that it creates and the mood it sets for the audience. Cloudy is second highest, but it also depends if the sun is shinning through the cloudiness or if there are too many clouds covering the sun, which creates a dull atmosphere, which is why it is second on the list. I will see if when i record i can when the weather is good enough for me to record a thriller.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 5: What is your favourite element of a thriller film. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With question, I can see that a lot of the answers are scattered and everyone has different opinions on what their favourite element of a thriller film is. The most popular thriller element is unexpected twists, and a lot of people enjoy plot twists. The second most favourite is intense action scenes in a action thriller, and these two are the most popular elements out of the four I wrote down. I will be using an unexpected twist in my production

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 6: Which of these plot devices do you enjoy the most in a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.
With this question I understand that there is a close gap between the most popular answer and the second most popular answer. A lot of people have chosen the "cat and mouse" theory which is based on a chase and escape theory. I can understand why people pick it. The second most popular was the unreliable narrator theory which is one that interested quite a lot of people and they enjoy this theory a lot. This shows me that i should include the cat and mouse theory in my production, so that most people are into the thriller opening sequence.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 7: What is your favourite setting in a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.
With this question i understand that a lot of people like the urban cityscape for a thriller film as it has a lot of backgrounds. The urban cityscape provides a lot help with props as well as its in a place where there can be different backgrounds instead of a countryside background. The second most popular is the idea of a foreign country and there are different background or different people and it brings a different atmosphere for the thriller film. This will help me choose a background for my film and where to record.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 8: What kind of ending do you prefer in a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With this question i can see that a lot of people have different opinions on how thrillers should end, but there's one ending that nearly half the people agree with and thats "twist endings", as i can agree I prefer twist endings as it helps with the thrill of the film. The second highest is "cliff hanger" and I can also agree that it is a really good ending to a thriller as it could maybe set the film up for a sequel. This will help as to what ending I should give it and if I were to do a cliff hanger ending I know that a lot of people will be into it.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 9: What type of protagonist do you prefer in a thriller film?. Number of responses: 18 responses.
With this question I can understand that most people enjoy watching a determined detective in a thriller film, as for them it is the most exciting protagonist to watch. The second most favourite protagonist is the flawed anti-hero which shows me that there are completely different people filling out my survey. This could help my production as to what type of story to produce.

Forms response chart. Question title: Question 10: What type of pacing do you prefer in thriller films?. Number of responses: 18 responses.

With this question I can see that most people really enjoy a fast and intense pacing, this is what gets people excited, the big gun scenes and the explosions is what people look forward to watching when they realise that the film has a fast and intense pacing. For my own production I will use a fast and intense pacing to increase the audiences attention.
